01 · Color

BBL photofacial

What it is

BBL stands for BroadBand Light, a Sciton device that delivers filtered pulses of visible and infrared light into the skin. Pigment and blood absorb that light; the surrounding skin largely does not. Brown spots darken and flake away over the following week, and dilated small vessels close, so redness fades. The current platform is the BBL HERO, and a full-face visit takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the areas treated.

What it treats

Sun spots and age spots, freckling from sun exposure, diffuse redness and the flushing pattern of rosacea, small visible vessels, and uneven tone. It does not tighten loose skin and it does not change texture much — that is what microneedling is for.

What a visit is like

The skin is cleansed, a cool gel is applied, and the handpiece is passed over each area. Most patients describe each pulse as a brief snap, like a rubber band, and no numbing is needed. Afterward the skin looks flushed for a few hours, treated spots darken over one to three days, and they flake off over roughly five to ten days on the face; the neck and chest heal more slowly, closer to two weeks. Makeup can go on the next day. Strict sun avoidance for two weeks before and after is not optional.

Why neck and chest are separate areas

Sun damage does not stop at the jawline, and the skin of the neck and décolletage is thinner, with fewer oil glands, so it is treated at different settings and heals on a different schedule. Treating the face alone can leave a visible line where the correction ends. Face, neck and chest together is the common request for patients whose sun exposure has been years of driving, hiking and skiing.

How many sessions

A series of three, spaced about four weeks apart, is the standard plan; maintenance is typically one or two treatments a year.

02 · Acne

BBL Clear for acne

What it is

BBL Clear is the same BroadBand Light platform used with a filter in the blue-light range (420 nm), which targets the bacteria involved in acne and reduces the redness around active breakouts. It is a treatment for active acne and the redness it leaves behind, not for scarring — scarring is a texture problem, and SkinPen is the better tool for it.

Who it is for

Patients with active inflammatory acne who want a treatment that does not depend on daily medication, or who are already on a skincare plan and want to shorten the flare. Patients who have taken isotretinoin wait six months after stopping it before any light treatment. It can be combined with the medical skincare regimen Aunika sets up, and it is one of the places where her acne-management background matters most.

What to expect

Visits are short, about 15 to 20 minutes, with little to no downtime beyond mild flushing for a few hours. A series of three to six treatments spaced one to two weeks apart is typical for active acne, and improvement is gradual rather than overnight. Acne treatment is management, not cure, and the honest framing is that BBL Clear reduces the number and severity of breakouts for most patients while they stay on their plan.

03 · Texture

SkinPen microneedling

What it is

SkinPen is an FDA-cleared microneedling device. A sterile cartridge of fine needles creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin, and the skin's repair response builds new collagen in the weeks that follow. Nothing is injected and nothing is heated; the result comes from the skin's own healing.

What it treats

Texture — acne scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines, and the general roughness that light-based treatments do not address. SkinPen is cleared for facial acne scars and for neck wrinkles, which is why it is offered as face or face + neck.

BBL or microneedling?

The simplest way to decide: BBL treats color, SkinPen treats texture. Brown spots and redness point to BBL; scars, pores and fine lines point to SkinPen. Many patients have both concerns, and many end up doing both — but that sequencing is decided in person, with the skin in front of us, not from a menu.

What to expect

A numbing cream goes on for about 20 to 30 minutes, then the treatment itself takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. The skin is pink and feels sunburned for 24 to 72 hours, with light flaking by day three or four. A series of three treatments about four weeks apart is standard; collagen remodeling continues for roughly three months after the last session, so the full result is judged then, not at the next visit.

Who is a good candidate, and who is not

Light-based treatments work by having pigment absorb light, which means skin tone is the first question. Lighter skin types respond well to BBL. Darker skin types carry a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — darkening after treatment — and the deepest skin tones are generally not treated with BBL at all. Melasma, the patchy hormonal pigment common on the cheeks and upper lip, can be worsened by heat and light, so it is approached cautiously or sent to a different treatment entirely. A current tan, including a spray tan, is a reason to reschedule.

SkinPen is less dependent on skin tone and is often the better option for texture concerns in darker skin. Active infection, certain medications, and a history of keloid scarring are reasons to hold.

This is why the consultation is free. Candidacy is a decision about your skin, not a box you check online.

Why fall is the right time

BBL is a treatment whose success depends on sun avoidance for two weeks on either side of every session, and on not treating tanned skin. In Utah that makes October through March the working season. The spots that showed up over the summer are also easiest to see, and to treat, once the tan fades.

Three sessions spaced a month apart, started now, finish before spring.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What does a BBL photofacial treat?

Sun and age spots, freckling, diffuse redness and rosacea flushing, small visible vessels, and uneven tone on the face, neck and chest. It does not tighten skin or treat scars.

How many BBL sessions will I need?

Most patients do a series of three, about four weeks apart, then one or two maintenance treatments a year.

Does BBL hurt?

Each pulse feels like a brief snap against the skin. Numbing is not usually needed, and a face visit takes 30 to 60 minutes.

How long is the downtime after a BBL photofacial?

The skin is flushed for a few hours. Spots darken for one to three days, then flake off over about five to ten days on the face and up to two weeks on the neck and chest. Makeup can be worn the next day.

Who should not have BBL?

Patients with the deepest skin tones, patients with a current tan, and patients with melasma are generally not candidates or are treated cautiously. A free consultation with Aunika settles this before anything is booked.

What is BBL Clear?

BBL Clear is BroadBand Light used with a blue-light filter that targets acne bacteria and reduces the redness of active breakouts. It is for active acne, not acne scars.

What does SkinPen microneedling do that BBL doesn't?

SkinPen treats texture — acne scars, enlarged pores, fine lines — by triggering the skin's own collagen repair. BBL treats color. Many patients need one; some need both.

Can I do BBL and microneedling together?

Often yes, in sequence rather than on the same day, and the order depends on which concern matters more. That is decided at the consultation.

Who performs the treatments?

Aunika Naylor, a licensed master aesthetician, performs the treatments.
